OUR HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

The Burn is one of Natchez’s most significant purely Greek Revival homes. The outstanding architecture, antique 19th century furnishings, high style décor, landscaped gardens and fascinating history are just a few of the things that make the Burn so prominent and distinctive.

The Burn was built in 1834 to be the residence of John P and Sarah Walworth. Mr. Walworth was a wealthy planter, merchant, banker, and politician. The Burn is the earliest documented Greek Revival residence in Natchez, Mississippi. Listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1979, the Burn was built on a knoll to the north of the old town area of Natchez and was originally approximately 100 acres.  The Burn is a one and a half story Greek Revival, double -pile central hall plan building of frame construction upon a full open brick basement making it 3 stories. The Façade faces east and has five windows, a welcoming deep front gallery with a pedimented portico supported by four fluted Doric Columns and framed by a Grecian frieze. A long circular driveway to the front door borders the expansive front green lawn shaded with over 100-year-old Oaks and Cedars. The home is known for its lovely, terraced gardens of Camellias, azaleas, gardenias, specimen trees including the rare and beautiful Cunningham Firs or Monkey Puzzle trees and its Partier Garden. The Walworth family once had an English Gardener to help lay out and tend to their lovely gardens.

The Burn played a crucial part in the occupation of Natchez during the Civil War with The Burn being in the confines of the Union Fort McPherson.  It was the headquarters of the engineering department and signs of the occupation remain.

The Walworth family after the war still played a role in the history of Natchez by their participation as editor of the newspaper, The Democrat as well as well-known published writers and outstanding citizens. Generations of the Walworth family lived in The Burn for over 100 years.

Hospitality has been at the heart of The Burn for generations. It is one of the early show houses of the Natchez Pilgrimage, serving as a gathering place for events, hosting tourists and distinguished visitors to Natchez and as a recognized top Bed and Breakfast in the city for the past 30 years.  Today, The Burn continues to be a center of hospitality and entertainment. Showcased for its beautiful Greek Revival architecture, high style décor and gardens let The Burn show you why our citizens say a visit to Natchez, Mississippi, feels like coming home.
